Do you want to create a garden that is inviting, and nourishing, for people, and pollinators alike? In this workshop with Dan Jaffe, co-author of Native Plants for New England Gardens and longtime ecological horticulturist, we will focus on successful methods for creating habitats for pollinators and beneficial insects in the landscapes where we live and work. Join us at Pingree School to learn more about: why designing for pollinator health builds resiliency in our local ecosystem, design components that should be considered in every garden, which flower shapes and colors attract insects and other features that provide a variety of habitats for beneficial insect. When we design our gardens for increased pollinator habitat, specifically with the addition of perennial plants that add diversity, we also increase the overall resilience of the gardens. With many populations of pollinator species on the decline, it is important to build buffers and organic landscapes that can provide refuge for a variety of organisms. With a bit of knowledge and a selection of low-maintenance native plants, you can create a beautiful multi-tasking garden that nourishes the needs of humans and supports myriad pollinators.
Instructor:
Dan Jaffe earned a degree in botany from the University of Maine, Orono, an advanced certificate in Native Plant Horticulture and Design from Native Plant Trust (formally New England Wild Flower Society), and has years of nursery management and plant sales experience. He is passionate about ecological horticulture, building both sustainability and wildlife value into every landscape, and the foraging and cultivation of wild edible plants. He is the Horticulturalist and Propagator for Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary and the staff photographer. His book Native Plants for New England Gardens was released spring of 2018 and will be available for purchase.
