Cultivating Community Through the Creation of Nourishing Gardens

The mission of the Community Ecology Institute is to cultivate communities where people and nature thrive together. Based on a six and a half-acre urban farm in Maryland, the organization’s newest program is called Nourishing Gardens, which transforms lawns into ecologically beneficial food growing gardens that support the multi-faceted health of our community members. The Nourishing Gardens program emphasizes the empowerment and resiliency of our community by teaching people how to grow their own food and increasing access to fresh food grown where people live, learn, work, and play. This presentation will describe the development and implementation of the Nourishing Gardens program including lessons learned, impacts in the program’s first year, and goals for the future.
