SUMMARY:Webinar: Maximizing Space in the Garden: Creating More of a Good Thing
DESCRIPTION:No matter if you’re gardening in a close-knit neighborhood or a sprawling estate\, you want to garden efficiently\, prolifically\, sustainably\, and beautifully. You need to garden smartly and you’ve got to conserve your resources. \nThis lecture focuses on all the points on your checklist. When you layer a garden\, not only do you maximize space\, but you can also create hardworking habitats. You can fulfill a balance between what you need and what nature needs. \nUsing her own garden that she calls Furthermore as an example\, Tovah describes how to create layers in varied habitats including the perennial\, berry\, and vegetable gardens. The result is visually fulfilling\, low maintenance\, and mulch-eliminating when plants go wall-to-wall. This lecture shares how that shakes down to serve our needs as well as the needs of pollinators and other creatures. You can expect to hear many innovative ideas beyond the usual solutions. \nTovah Martin is an avid (verging on obsessed) gardener indoors and outside. She is the author of many gardening books. Her latest title\, The Garden in Every Sense and Seasonreceived GardenComm’s Gold Medal Media Award in 2019. That book follows The Indestructible Houseplant\, The Unexpected Houseplant\, and The New Terrarium\, and  Tasha Tudor’s Garden. \nA freelance writer\, Tovah’s articles have appeared in publications throughout the country including Country Home\, Traditional Home\, Martha Stewart Living\, New England Home\, Flower\, Cottage Journal\, and many more. Tovah has also had numerous television appearances. She is the recipient of their medal for outstanding literary achievement and received the Gustav Mehlquist Award—the highest honor bestowed by the Connecticut Horticultural Society. She is an accredited Organic Land Care Professional through NOFA   With lifelong experience with indoor gardening\, she also serves as a houseplant coach. \n \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Beauty and Biodiversity at Cornell’s Mundy Wildflower Garden
DESCRIPTION:Please join Krissy Boys for a comprehensive virtual field trip of four discreet sustainable landscapes within the Mundy Wildflower Garden at the Cornell Botanic Gardens. This virtual field trip includes: \n\nThe specialist bee pollinator garden\nThe flood plain forest\nThe deer exclosure\nThe native lawn\nThe stream bank restoration\n\nThe presentation will cover the principles of plant conservation and plant propagation\, habitat gardening in full sun and in deep shade over limestone\, as well as gravel gardening at the stream bank restoration site. \nWe can easily and quickly create native plant displays that mature into prospering plant communities\, filled with color\, texture\, and movement for us\, while also providing habitat for wildlife. There are species in our midst that depend exclusively on common plants for their survival. The ingredients for success in gardening with them are attainable\, and available to all\, when we learn to read the landscape\, apply what we learn\, while keeping a few essential steps in mind as we go.\nThink positively and enjoy the process. Also make sure to use a systematic approach with these essential steps: source local gravel\, reference a local plant community\, obtain permission to collect seeds\, and create a small-scale propagation area in your home or business. \nRead more about the Cornell restoration project in the ELA Newsletter article: Native Plants Shine in Streambank Restoration. \nKrissy Boys has been a professional gardener for nearly 31 years. Her gardening career began with native plants at the Brandywine Conservancy and Brandywine River Museum in Chads Ford\, PA.  F.M. Mooberry\, the founder of the Brandywine Garden and of the Millersville Plant Conference\, was Krissy’s supervisor and mentor in native plant gardening. Krissy has been managing the Mundy Wildflower Garden at Cornell Botanic Gardens for 21 years. From 1992 -1999 Krissy looked after the Comstock Knoll Rhododendron Collection\, the Pounder Heritage Vegetable Crops and the Poisonous Plants Garden. She volunteered as a land steward for the Finger Lakes Land Trust from 1992-2011 and has been a steering committee member of the Finger Lakes Native Plant Society since 1998.

SUMMARY:Webinar: The Journey of Edible Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Edible landscaping is the use of food-producing plants in the residential landscape. It can combine fruit and nut trees\, berrying shrubs\, vegetables\, herbs\, edible flowers\, along with ornamental plants into aesthetically pleasing designs. These designs can adopt any garden style and may include anywhere from 1 to 100 percent edible specimens. A gardener can install an entirely edible landscape or incorporate some edible plants into existing gardens. \nBut where did edible landscapes begin?\nThis presentation begins where agriculture began\, the Zagros Mountain Range on the border of Iran and Iraq. From there it travels through the Middle East and Europe showing how we went from subsistence farming to aesthetic gardening in response to the rise of privilege. \nThe remaining portion of the presentation covers edible plantings in a variety of settings such as within flower gardens\, in garden islands\, and in containers and closes with different annual and perennial plants commonly found in Edible Landscaping. \nSven Pihl\, founder of CT Edible Ecosystems\, LLC is a Regenerative Land Planner/Designer and Permaculture educator formerly based in Connecticut. Sven designs multifunctional Edible Landscapes and Forest Gardens for homes\, commercial properties\, campuses and public spaces. He’s passionate about regenerative landscape design to create productive agro-ecosystems.\nHis education ranges from local coursework to the University of Missouri’s\, Center for Agroforestry and Multifunction Carbon Sequestration Agroforestry at the Yale School of the Environment. He has worked on Permaculture and Agroforestry projects from New Jersey to New Hampshire. \nSven currently works for the Savanna Institute as the Agroforestry Technical Service Provider for the state of Illinois and Indiana and is working to rebrand CT Edible Ecosystems into a national entity.
