SUMMARY:Webinar: Proper Planting Practices: Are We Landscaping in a Deficit Model?
DESCRIPTION:In the Nursery and Landscape Industry\, there is an overabundance of clouded misinformation that is passed down to the general public on how to design and maintain their landscape. From every direction\, inaccurate or antiquated information flows. From big box stores and local Mom and Pop nurseries to examples\, images\, and text on the internet. \nThere are visual examples that exist everywhere of ill-managed landscapes in both commercial properties and private residences. \nThere are significant differences in training and quality between companies that offer services based on best practices. So how do we improve our company standards or how do you\, as a consumer\, know if you’re getting the best quality for your money? \nIn this presentation\, Richard McCoy will provide information on current techniques of proper planting\, how to correct unseen issues that are borne in the landscape nursery\, the importance of the plant root collar\, plant placement by matching site conditions to a plant’s cultural needs\, and how these efforts add value vs. “cheap’ alternatives. \nDiscussion points:\n• Are We Landscaping in a Deficit Model?\n• The Root (collar) of the problem\n• Right Plant – Right Place\n• Proper Planting B&B and Container plants\n• Value vs. Cheap – You get what you pay for \nRichard McCoy has over 30-years’ experience in the green industry. He is the visionary behind Richard A. McCoy Horticultural Services Inc.\, which he established in 1993. Since transitioning from conventional to organic and ecological methods in 2005\, McCoy Horticultural has been offering environmentally and sustainably responsible\, fine-gardening ecological design\, green infrastructure installations\, maintenance\, and organic lawn care. \nRichard’s work includes Stony Wood Garden\, a 3.5-acre private woodland garden in Princeton\, NJ\, that has been recognized by The Smithsonian Institute’s Archives of American Gardens. \nRichard is an advisor and practitioner council member for The Organic Landscape Association\, a nationally recognized organization. Additionally\, Richard is a member of Rutgers University’s Organic Land Care Working Group. He holds a Certificate of Organic Land Care through the Rutgers Organic Land Care Program\, is a certified Natural Turf and Landscape Manager\, is an organic Lawn Care Accredited Professional\, and a NOFA (Northeast Organic Farming Association) Accredited Organic Land Care Professional.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Beauty and Biodiversity at Cornell’s Mundy Wildflower Garden
DESCRIPTION:Please join Krissy Boys for a comprehensive virtual field trip of four discreet sustainable landscapes within the Mundy Wildflower Garden at the Cornell Botanic Gardens. This virtual field trip includes: \n\nThe specialist bee pollinator garden\nThe flood plain forest\nThe deer exclosure\nThe native lawn\nThe stream bank restoration\n\nThe presentation will cover the principles of plant conservation and plant propagation\, habitat gardening in full sun and in deep shade over limestone\, as well as gravel gardening at the stream bank restoration site. \nWe can easily and quickly create native plant displays that mature into prospering plant communities\, filled with color\, texture\, and movement for us\, while also providing habitat for wildlife. There are species in our midst that depend exclusively on common plants for their survival. The ingredients for success in gardening with them are attainable\, and available to all\, when we learn to read the landscape\, apply what we learn\, while keeping a few essential steps in mind as we go.\nThink positively and enjoy the process. Also make sure to use a systematic approach with these essential steps: source local gravel\, reference a local plant community\, obtain permission to collect seeds\, and create a small-scale propagation area in your home or business. \n  \n \n  \nRead more about the Cornell restoration project in the ELA Newsletter article: Native Plants Shine in Streambank Restoration. \nKrissy Boys has been a professional gardener for nearly 31 years. Her gardening career began with native plants at the Brandywine Conservancy and Brandywine River Museum in Chads Ford\, PA.  F.M. Mooberry\, the founder of the Brandywine Garden and of the Millersville Plant Conference\, was Krissy’s supervisor and mentor in native plant gardening. Krissy has been managing the Mundy Wildflower Garden at Cornell Botanic Gardens for 21 years. From 1992 -1999 Krissy looked after the Comstock Knoll Rhododendron Collection\, the Pounder Heritage Vegetable Crops and the Poisonous Plants Garden. She volunteered as a land steward for the Finger Lakes Land Trust from 1992-2011 and has been a steering committee member of the Finger Lakes Native Plant Society since 1998.

SUMMARY:The Otherworldly Magic of Tree Communication
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday will be lovely weather!  Grab your sandwich\, bring your laptop outside and join us on this fascinating lecture about how trees actually chat with each other and the world around them.  Forest ecosystems are held together by relationships among individual trees and between trees and other organisms. Contrary to traditional forest management models that focus on competition between trees\, there is a richness of interactions in a healthy forest. In particular\, the amazing ways that trees communicate and cooperate with each other seem almost like otherworldly magic.  Maybe we can learn how to be better listeners too? \nJoin the Aspetuck Land Trust’s special guest speaker forest scientist Dr. Charlotte Pyle for a fascinating lunch and learn talk… you’ll never look at trees the same way again! \n
