SUMMARY:Ecology-Based Landscapes: A Virtual Education Series
DESCRIPTION:NDAL is offering a series of programming organized in two categories: 1) Professional Practitioners and 2) Home Gardeners & Educators. \nTopics for professionals will range from native design and management\, to roof gardens\, to planning for the recruitment of spontaneous vegetation. \nHome gardeners can explore methods for wildflower meadow creation\, and school administrators & educators can learn about how to incorporate native gardening into their curriculum/campuses. \nJoin the room – virtually – for our Prairie-side Chat series as Larry Weaner interviews and compares notes with iconic practitioners Piet Oudolf\, Gerould Wilhelm\, Charles Birnbaum\, and Darrel Morrison. \nFor more information about all programs CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:Class: Expanding Your Business with Green Infrastructure: Five Tools to Incorporate this Season
DESCRIPTION:Water simultaneously manages to be the stuff of mystery and our daily routine.   We use it to cook with\, wash our dishes\, and brush our teeth but very few can stand on the beach and not lose themselves watching the breakers roll in. \nIn the face of climate change\, water is becoming much more of an issue\, we either have too much too little and never when we really need it.  Water bans\, flooding and erosion are common now and it feels as if this life-giving resource has turned against us. \nGet reacquainted with water and learn simple methods to capture and reuse storm water or slow stormwater runoff. Green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) can restore healthy waterways and revitalize urban communities but requires a multi-disciplinary design approach informed by ecology\, community\, and long-term maintenance. \nThis class will introduce you to five GSI tools that you can use in your own landscapes or design into client projects: \n\nRain harvesting\nPermeable pavements\nGreen roofs\nBioswales and rain gardens\nTree Planting\n\nWith detailed discussion and project photos\, Trevor Smith will introduce you to five practical Green Stormwater Infrastructure tools. He will share his two decades of practical experience designing\, installing\, and improving stormwater management systems. The class will include time for Trevor to address your questions on these GI tools. \nTrevor Smith is the owner of Land Escapes\, a full service regenerative landscape design and build company based in the Boston area. Land Escapes specializes in green stormwater infrastructure\, such as permeable pavers and rain gardens\, as well as in landscapes designed to maximize Earth’s systems while balancing them with the needs and desires of her human inhabitants. Mr. Smith is equally driven by both the form and function of his landscape designs He is passionate about the natural world which inspires his commitment to ecological principles and practices and devoted to creating beautiful landscapes that provide clients with an oasis to reconnect with the natural world. Mr. Smith holds several landscape certifications\, including MCH\, NOFA AOLCP\, LEEDGA\, and IPCI\, and he is also a past President of the Ecological Landscape Alliance and a current Trustee. \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Foliage & Focal Points: Ideas for Budgets and Gardens of All Sizes
DESCRIPTION:« All Events \nWebinar: Foliage & Focal Points: Ideas for Budgets and Gardens of All Sizes\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe all have sections of our garden that we are less than satisfied with\, yet understanding what has gone wrong can be frustrating. Instinct sends us shopping for more plants and we typically gravitate towards whatever is blooming that day in the hope that the injection of fresh color will solve the problem. Yet as we add in these new treasures\, the sense of dissatisfaction quickly grows\, especially when the flowers finish blooming and we are left with a muddled sea of nondescript leaves. \nIn this presentation\, Karen Chapman will explain the importance of establishing focal points\, a key component of good garden design\, and analyze three areas where they play an important role. This presentation will explore the use of containers\, structures\, water features\, and artistic sculptural elements as focal points and discuss how to frame and enhance these with interesting foliage to create a memorable vignette. \nWith ideas for budgets and gardens of all sizes\, you will quickly gain the confidence and knowledge to transform your own landscape into a cohesive series of eye-catching scenes. \n\nKaren Chapman was born in England and grew up with a trowel in her hand.\nAfter moving to the Pacific Northwest in 1996 she joined one of the leading nurseries as a garden plant specialist. Ten years later she established Le jardinet\, a custom landscape design company specializing in creating artistic plant combinations with a four-season foliage framework\, functional outdoor living spaces\, and deer-resistant designs.\nKaren teaches both container and landscape design in workshops and seminars across the country as well offering a range of online learning opportunities.\nWhen she’s not teaching garden design Karen is usually writing about it\, her articles and designs being featured in many national gardening publications including Fine Gardening\, Country Gardens\, Sunset\, and Garden Design magazines. She has co-authored two books: the award-winning Fine Foliage (St. Lynn’s Press\, 2013) and the highly acclaimed Gardening with Foliage First (Timber Press\, 2017) while her latest book\, Deer Resistant Design: Gardens that Thrive Despite the Deer was released in 2019 (Timber Press) much to the relief of deer-challenged gardeners nationwide.
