SUMMARY:Tree Talk: On the Nature\, Culture\, and Politics of Tree Planting
DESCRIPTION:Urban reforestation is recognized as one of the most effective ways to increase cities’ resiliency to climate change and to provide numerous health and social benefits to residents. But the movement to plant trees systematically and comprehensively in cities was born in the 19th Century both in Europe and in the US. Join University of Pennsylvania professor and Landscape Historian Sonja Duempelmann for a conversation on the origins of urban greening and what we can learn today from more than a century of these efforts.

SUMMARY:Pruning Ornamental Shrubs
DESCRIPTION:NOFA Vermont is hosting an online workshop on pruning. Due to current requirements regarding social distancing\, NOFA Vermont will be holding workshops seminars as video conferences. They’ll send an email with instructions ahead of time and will provide you with technical support to make your experience as smooth as possible. The goal is to keep you safe and to support you with all of your gardening needs and knowledge \nIn this seminar\, which is a combination of classroom time and hands on demo in the gardens\, we will focus on pruning ornamental shrubs in the home garden. There are many types of shrubs; some of them require specific times for proper pruning and some of them don’t mind a liberal cutting back any time of year. Chad Donovan\, horticulturist and Red Wagon employee\, will demystify the process of summertime pruning and explain how and when to prune during the rest of the year. Please come with questions\, feel free to bring photos of your shrubs\, and together\, we will make sure you leave feeling confident and full of understandable\, expert advice.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Managing Soil Fertility: Understanding Your Lab Soil Test Reports
DESCRIPTION:Join NOFA MASS for another of our free weekly Resiliency Skills Online Gatherings on Friday\, May 22nd\, at 5:30pm. We will have an Introduction to Managing Soil Fertility: Understanding Your Lab Soil Test Reports.Getting a soil test done is an important step in creating a successful garden\, and nutrient levels can change over the years as some minerals leach or are taken up by plants\, while others build with additions of organic matter and fertilizers. In this webinar\, we’ll talk about how to identify\, address\, and respond to mineral imbalances and deficiencies to increase your crop health and improve the quality and nutrient levels of your produce. We’ll review two approaches to two different soil tests. Anna Gilbert-Muhammad will explain how to send in a UMass Soil Test (or similar University soil test) and how to interpret the results. She will offer some ideas for some easy-to-find materials that you can use to adjust for deficiencies without needing to go to an agricultural supplier. Laura will then describe how to send in and interpret a Logan Labs test. These tests use a different extraction process and the results are geared more towards professional growers\, but gardeners can also use Logan Labs to get excellent results with a little math. Laura will explain how to interpret the results and how to do the calculations to determine what amendments you will need. We will discuss several concepts: \n–       What is pH and why does it matter?\n–       Cation Exchange Capacity\n–       Organic Matter- how much nitrogen does your organic matter provide?\n–       Trace elements- why do they matter?\n–       What is the Albrecht method of soil balancing? \n

SUMMARY:Inviting Beneficial Insects to Your Farm and Garden (Resiliency Skills Webinar Series)
DESCRIPTION:Online registration for this event coming soon \nNOFA MASS presents this interactive online event which highlights plants and regenerative agriculture principles that support beneficial insects. Join Elise and Tucker Smith of Cedar Rock Gardens\, a vegetable farm and seedling nursery open to the public in Gloucester\, to learn from about how they are helping pollinators and many other beneficial insects flourish on their farm\, Subjects to be covered: \n\nVirtually tour the farm and see how they provide a variety of habitats for beneficial insects\nLearn about perennial plants for cut flowers\nDiscuss the value of intercropping and which crops they are planting together\nLearn more about low-till and no-till farming practices\n\nCedar Rock Gardens comprises 13.5 acres in Gloucester\, Massachusetts where they grow a large variety of vegetables on 2.5 acres of land utilizing crop rotation schedules and cover crops to ensure good soil practices. They operate a retail stand on the farm\, sell directly to local restaurants and have an 80 member CSA. Additionally\, they currently have about 7\,300 square feet of heated greenhouse space where they grow herbs\, vegetables\, and a variety of annual and perennial flower seedlings. They practice shallow-till and no-till farming practices to preserve habitat for beneficial insects and maintain biological diversity in their fields. \nWhen we design for increased pollinator habitat we also increase the overall resilience of the farm\, specifically with the addition of native perennial plants that add both above-ground and below-ground (rhizosphere) diversity\, which increases the carbon sequestration capacity of the landscape. With many populations of pollinator species on the decline\, it is important to build buffers and organic landscapes that can provide refuge for a variety of organisms. With a bit of knowledge and design you can have a biodiverse farm that utilizes marginal areas of your farm to grow new crops for your market.
