SUMMARY:Propagating & Sowing New England Meadow Plants
DESCRIPTION:New England meadow plants include a wide array of genera and are wonderful succession plants for many landscapes—dry open fields or damp\, shady woodland clearings\, large garden borders or converted lawn spaces. In Partnership with CT NOFA\, this hands-on workshop welcomes all horticulture professionals\, whether nursery growers\, gardeners\, or landscape designers\, to come learn about the considerations and processes of propagating\, sowing\, and growing native herbaceous species. Instructors Leo Kenney from Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary and Emily Baisden from Wild Seed Project will discuss seed preservation\, methods for strong and timely germination\, and growing materials. Students will leave confident in the knowledge that they can incorporate these species into their businesses operations. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLeo Kenney is an ecologist and horticulturist currently based at Norcross Wildlife Foundation. There they work to enhance and supplement native plant communities and improve wildlife habitat using a wide array of applied ecology techniques\, including seed collection\, propagation from wild seed\, restoration planting\, and invasive species management. \nEmily Baisden works as the Seed Propagation Manager for Wild Seed Project. Prior to that\, Emily served as Entomologist and Educator at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. She has an extensive background in native horticulture and environmental education and focuses largely on using native plants to support food webs and biodiversity. She holds a BS in environmental science from the University of New England and an MS in entomology from the University of Delaware.

SUMMARY:11th Biennial symposium (Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group)
DESCRIPTION:Hello\,\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nThe Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group (CIPWG) is currently planning our 11th biennial symposium\, which will be held virtually on November 3\, 2022. In past years\, your organization was a supporting partner for the symposium. Will your organization again be willing to partner for the 2022 CIWPG symposium?   \n  \nAs a supporting partner for the CIPWG symposium\, we ask for your assistance in promoting the event\, through websites\, social media\, emails\, or newsletters. There is no cost to be a supporting partner for CIPWG’s biennial invasive plant symposium. In return\, we will list your organization as a supporting partner on the CIPWG Symposium webpage\, including a link to your website if desired. Our Symposium Booklet of Abstracts\, Bios\, and Contact Information will also include your organization’s name. \nPlease reply electronically asap to Alyssa Siegel-Miles (alyssa.siegel-miles@uconn.edu) if you would like to be a supporting partner for the 2022 CIPWG symposium and include an image of your association’s logo. We will then send additional information that you may use for publicity. Please let us know if the publicity information should go to someone other than you.  \nPast symposia have always been well attended\, both in person and virtually. As COVID-19 continues to limit the ability of outside groups to use UConn facilities\, this year’s symposium will again be virtual. Feedback from the 2020 symposium reinforced the positive aspects of a virtual program: available to more people from a wider geographic area\, reduction in travel time\, and the opportunity for those who have registered for the symposium to re-listen to the seminars after the program has completed.  \n  \nThe symposium is beneficial to people from a diverse array of backgrounds\, including property owners\, community volunteers\, master gardeners\, land care and natural resource professionals\, landscape architects\, members of conservation organizations\, and town committee members. The program will be similar to preceding years\, with some sessions directed to all attendees and other sessions in concurrent breakouts. Attendees will choose two Breakout Sessions to view during the event. (As mentioned\, the entire recording\, including all sessions\, will be available for post-event watching for all registered attendees.) Pesticide Recertification Credits and Continuing Education Credits (CEUs) for multiple organizations will be available. \n  \nThe theme of the 2022 CIPWG Symposium is Strategies for Managing Invasive Plants: Assess\, Remove\, Replace\, and Restore. The symposium will feature keynote speaker Bernd Blossey\, Cornell University\, and a general session with Bryan Connolly (ECSU) followed by six breakout sessions: \n\nAssessing the Land: Case studies on What Works\nWhat’s Working Around the State\nManaging in your Backyard: Failures and Successes\nLimitations Legal and Practical\nAquatic Concerns\nReplacement and Restoration: Design; Propagating and Sourcing Native Seed\n\n  \nThe full program and a link to online registration will soon be available on the CIPWG website at: cipwg.uconn.edu/2022-symposium. \nThank you for your consideration of this request.  If you have questions\, please contact alyssa.siegel-miles@uconn.edu.  \nSincerely\, \nRose Hiskes\, Victoria Wallace\, and Emmett Varricchio \nCIPWG Co-Chairs \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlyssa Siegel-Miles \nProgram Aide \nUConn Extension \nNew London County \n562 New London Turnpike \nNorwich\, CT 06360 \n(P) 860-887-1608 \n(F) 860-886-1164 \n  \nUConn Extension Ties Research to Real Life \n  \nThe University of Connecticut is an Equal Opportunity Employer and Program Provider.

SUMMARY:Connecticut Horticultural Society presents “Stone in the Garden” with Andrew Pighills
DESCRIPTION:Contact Tracey Weiss\, Director of Communications\, at news@cthort.org or \n860-796-0185 \n  \nConnecticut Horticultural Society presents \n“Stone in the Garden” with Andrew Pighills \nThursday\, October 20\, 7:30pm—In person and virtual\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n  \nConnecticut Horticultural Society’s ongoing speaker series continues this fall with Andrew Pighills\, who is presenting “Stone in the Garden\,” on October 20 a \nt 7:30pm at Emanuel Synagogue (160 Mohegan Drive\, West Hartford) and on Zoom. A Q&A follows the talk. \n\nThe presentation explores the myriad ways in which structure is created in the landscape using natural stone. He elaborates on where to place stone in the garden\, including stone walls to define garden areas\, or paths\, walkways and patios\, as well as which materials are most suitable to creating contrast or harmony. \n \nBorn in Yorkshire\, England\, Andrew Pighills is an accomplished gardener\, horticulturist and builder of dry stone walls. He received his formal horticulture training with The Royal Horticultural Society and has spent 30 years creating gardens and building dry stone walls in his native England in and around the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. \n \nIn 2001\, Andrew moved to the United States where he and his wife\, Michelle Becker\, an accomplished artist\, designer and gardener\, have combined their complementary skills to form English Gardens and Landscaping\, in Killingworth\, CT. They distinguish themselves in designing and installing residential landscapes that draw inspiration from the enchanting settings and exuberant lushness of the traditional English “cottage” gardens that they know and love so well.  \n\nAndrew’s stone work has been featured in a programming series on traditional English construction methods on BBC television. More recently\, Andrew’s work has been featured in The New York Times\, Martha Stewart Radio\, The New Haven Register\, Yankee Magazine and numerous other publications. Andrew is a member of the prestigious Dry Stone Walling Association. \n   \nThe talk is free for members and $10 for non-members. For more information or for non-members to register\, visit www.cthort.org. \n  \n  \nThe Connecticut Horticultural Society is a nonprofit\, educational organization dedicated to encouraging and improving the practice of gardening and the dissemination of horticultural information to its members and the public. The Society\, through its many and varied programs\, seeks to encourage the enjoyment\, appreciation and understanding of plants\, the environment\, and the art and science of gardening. \n                                                                                     \n ******

SUMMARY:Cultivating Community Through the Creation of Nourishing Gardens
DESCRIPTION:The mission of the Community Ecology Institute is to cultivate communities where people and nature thrive together. Based on a six and a half-acre urban farm in Maryland\, the organization’s newest program is called Nourishing Gardens\, which transforms lawns into ecologically beneficial food growing gardens that support the multi-faceted health of our community members. The Nourishing Gardens program emphasizes the empowerment and resiliency of our community by teaching people how to grow their own food and increasing access to fresh food grown where people live\, learn\, work\, and play. This presentation will describe the development and implementation of the Nourishing Gardens program including lessons learned\, impacts in the program’s first year\, and goals for the future. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWednesday\, July 27\, 2022\, 2:30 – 3:45 PM \n \n

SUMMARY:Eco-tour: Native Plant Center
DESCRIPTION:Lady Bird Johnson had a passion to preserve and protect the country’s native plants and natural landscapes. The Native Plant Center was founded more than 20 years ago as the first affiliate of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Texas. Originally a project of the Westchester Community College Foundation\, The Native Plant Center today is a vital program on the campus of Westchester Community College in Valhalla\, New York. Join this professionally guided tour to learn more. \nAdmission is free but registration is required. \nThe Cottage Garden\nThe recently renovated New American Cottage Garden teaches by example\, using native plants in familiar elements of a home garden such as a perennial bed\, shrub border\, and a water feature that can be replicated in one’s own landscape. The central bed showcases natives in a formal display that appeals to gardeners with a more traditional sensibility. Benches are crafted from black locust\, and an arbor features native vines. The lawn was replaced with ferns\, ornamental grasses\, and ground-covers to further illustrate sustainable principles. The garden was designed for The Native Plant Center by landscape architect Ken Uhle. The more than 800 plants representing 60 species and cultivars attract wildlife- and people\, who find peace and a sense of place within the natural-design setting. \nMeadow and LBJ Demonstration Garden\nThe Lady Bird Johnson Demonstration Garden was established in 1998 to honor the First Lady\, whose commitment to the preservation of native plants increased public awareness about their environmental necessity\, economic value\, and natural beauty. We are under way with a multi-year project to renovate and expand the garden to further illustrate how to incorporate native plants using sustainable design elements. The centerpiece of the garden is a native meadow\, which is bordered on one side by a new buffer garden to block out unsightly views of a 300-car parking lot. \n \nTour Guide: Patricia Butter\, Garden Manager/Educator \nPatty Butter has a keen understanding of plant science and an enthusiasm for teaching others about native plants. She holds a certificate in sustainable gardening from The Native Plant Center’s Go Native U program at Westchester Community College and has studied extensively  at The New York Botanical Garden in botany\, horticulture\, and landscape design. Her field work includes identifying and cataloging the flora at a nearby state park\, where she also trains staff and volunteers in herbarium preservation. \n

SUMMARY:Inclusive Placemaking: Creating Urban Habitats and Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Randall’s Island\, located next to Manhattan\, is well known as a home for numerous public institutions\, and as a destination for sports and outdoor music events. That said\, most New Yorkers are unaware that it is also home to many acres of wetlands\, woodlands\, meadows\, and ornamental gardens that create beauty and sanctuary on a landscape that is surrounded on all sides by the bustle of New York City. In this presentation Veronica will show how native gardens were planted to enhance biodiversity and create greater access for the highly diverse surrounding community. \nThe act of shaping the built environment has historically been the domain of the few and the privileged. Angela Kyle will show examples from her work in New Orleans\, Louisiana and Pensacola\, Florida\, using play and experiential learning to shape child-friendly environments\, and invite young people and under-represented communities to the table. She will also illustrate how she has used personal history and narrative to engage Black residents in the restoration of cultural landscapes historically significant to the African-American community. \n Thursday\, July 21\, 2022\, 1:30 – 3:45 PM

SUMMARY:Webinar: Soil – It’s What Plants Crave!
DESCRIPTION:Come get your soils questions answered by The Organic Mechanic! Soils are the foundation of any garden. Managing soils organically improves soil structure\, soil microbiology\, and increases ecosystem health. This conversation about organic soils\, fertilizers\, and soil amendments will outline basic soil science and focus on how to maximize soil productivity with organic methods. \nIt was on a beautiful piece of Illinois farmland that Mark Highlandpushed his first shovel into garden soil. After he “grew up\,” Mark focused his M.S. degree studies in the Longwood Graduate Program on compost and potting soil. After the Longwood Graduate Program\, Mark started The Organic Mechanic Soil Company\, LLC in 2006\, and serves as President of Organic Mechanics. Mark has served as a consultant for the EPA and Institute for Local Self-Reliance. Mark is the author of the recently published Practical Organic Gardening: The No-Nonsense Guide to Growing Naturally.

SUMMARY:Online | For us and Them: How Edible Native Plants Can Feed Us and Wildlife Together
DESCRIPTION:Ask ten folks why they grow plants and you’re likely to get a variety of answers. The most common reasons are often aesthetic in nature–we like the look of a garden; it gives us a place to relax or play or drink wine with friends. However\, simple beauty is not always enough\, and in the modern era complicated issues such as sustainability and food stability are becoming more commonplace. Which plants will have the greatest ecological impacts? Which edibles are resistant to diseases and pests? What if you could have it all? A beautiful\, edible landscape that also supports the local ecosystem. \nJoin Dan Jaffe Wilder\, author and photographer of Native Plants for New England Gardens and Ecological Horticulturist at Norcross Wildlife Foundation\, to learn how low-maintenance native plants can feed us and wildlife together. \nCost: $20 \nPlease click here to register for this class \nAbout Dan Jaffe Wilder\, Director of Applied Ecology\, Norcross Wildlife Foundation \nPhotographer and author Dan Jaffe Wilder has over fifteen years’ experience with ecological horticulture. He is a propagator of native species\, the photographer and author of Native Plants for New England Gardens and a lecturer on numerous topics including wildlife habitat\, sustainable landscape practices\, foraging and cultivation of edible species\, low-maintenance horticulture and others. He has developed a native plant horticultural database (https://plantfinder.nativeplanttrust.org/Plant-Search) and has years of nursery management experience. \nDan earned a degree in botany from the University of Maine\, Orono\, and an advanced certificate in Native Plant Horticulture and Design from Native Plant Trust (formally New England Wild Flower Society). He is the Director of Applied Ecology for the Norcross Wildlife Foundation and is currently building his own home-scale homestead\, growing and foraging numerous edible species\, preserving and cooking whenever possible\, and raising small animals.

SUMMARY:Online: Going Native with Dan Jaffe Wilder
DESCRIPTION:The past decade has seen massive changes in the landscape industry. The days of landscapes dedicated to beauty alone are passing. Customers are demanding ecologically sensitive landscapes; they want reduced lawn\, reduced maintenance\, and greater wildlife value. In other words\, they want native plants. But not all natives make good landscape choices; some are overly fussy about their habitat needs\, while others will take over small spaces\, and plenty more simply don’t resonate with all clients. Join Dan Jaffe Wilder\, author\, and the Director of Applied Ecology at Norcross Wildlife Foundation for a discussion about how to work native plants into any landscape. From tried-and-true species to solution plants for hard-to-fill spots we will discuss how to landscape with native plants successfully. \nCost: $25 \nClick here to register for this online presentation \nAbout Dan Jaffe Wilder\, Director of Applied Ecology\, Norcross Wildlife Foundation \nPhotographer and author Dan Jaffe Wilder has over fifteen years’ experience with ecological horticulture.
