DESCRIPTION:This event confers 1 CEU for AOLCPs \nPresented by Desirée L. Narango\, Conservation Biologist\, Vermont Center for EcoStudies \nBird populations are declining at an alarming rate due to habitat loss\, climate change\, and pesticides. Fortunately\, there are simple actions you can take to restore critical bird habitat in your yards and gardens. In this talk\, Desirée will share her research on the importance of native plants to food webs\, why insects matter for bird conservation\, and the practical steps you can take to support bird habitat throughout the year. \nDesirée L. Narango is a conservation scientist at the Vermont Center for EcoStudies. Her research program focuses on understanding how global change impacts bird and insect populations\, and identifying conservation solutions in human-dominated habitats including residential yards and urban green spaces. Desirée has a Ph.D. in Entomology and Wildlife Ecology from the University of Delaware. \nJoin this FREE workshop in-person in Lexington\, MA (no registration required) or sign up to view it online via Zoom

SUMMARY:Soil Health 3-Ways - July Session
DESCRIPTION:This 4-class course confers 4 CEUs for AOLCPs. \nUnder the tutelage of CT NOFA Soil Health Program Manager\, Monique Bosch\, Soil Health 3-Ways participants will attend three virtual classes (via Zoom) that cover the three main properties of soil – physical\, chemical\, and biological – in the lead-up to an in-person\, practical application class. This 4-class course is intended for both commercial farmers and home gardeners to help them work with nature to produce healthy plants and nutrient-dense food. \nA single registration for this event includes access to all four classes in the course (descriptions\, dates\, and times detailed below). Zoom links for the virtual classes will be provided after registration. Attendance is limited to 22 participants. \nClass Details\nPhysical Properties (virtual) – July 9th\, 6:00pm-7:30pm\nYou will learn to interpret what type of soil and conditions you are working with\, using simple tools and methods. We will explore management practices for best structure\, texture\, and tilth. Understanding the physical properties of soil will help with many aspects of soil health that are often ignored. Rather than relying just on a chemical soil test\, physical testing will give us a better understanding of the actual make-up of our soils. This class will give you the ability to use simple tools to perform physical tests on soil to determine compaction\, soil texture\, structure and permeability. \nChemical Properties (virtual) – July 16th\, 6:00pm-7:30pm\nWe will learn how to interpret a chemical soil test\, analyzing macro and micro-nutrients\, pH\, Cation Exchange Capacity and Organic Matter content\, and how these values affect our soil’s ability to grow healthy plants and nutritious food. Using regenerative farming methods\, we will address issues of nutrient deficiency\, chemical imbalance\, and excesses. \nBiological Properties (virtual) – July 23rd\, 6:00pm-7:30pm\nWe will study the ‘Soil Food Web\,’ learning about the living organisms in our soil\, from the visible to the microscopic. Using a microscope\, we will zoom in to study the microbial communities that live in our soils and compost. With an understanding of the complex trophic structure of life in our soils\, we can determine aggregate structure\, fungal/bacterial ratios\, as well as nutrient cycling\, all influenced by our soil management practices\, as well as the chemical and physical make-up of our soils. \nPractical Application (In-Person @ The Hickories Farm) – July 25th\, 1:00pm-4:00pm\nThe course will conclude with an in-person\, practical application meeting at The Hickories Farm in Ridgefield\, CT\, putting to use many of the skills and topics we have covered in the previous virtual sessions. We will perform physical testing of soil\, including methods that you can apply to your own land or garden. To help determine the life in soil\, we will have microscopes on-hand to study various soil/compost samples. Together\, we will explore how we can work with nature to create healthy\, living soil. \nCost\nThis course is free for all participants thanks to grant funding through the Transition to Organic Partnership Program. \nClick here to register for this course

SUMMARY:CT NOFA 2027 Winter Conference
DESCRIPTION:This conference confers 4.0 CEUs for AOLCPs. \nCT NOFA’s 45th annual winter conference will be taking place March 13\, 2027\, at Wesleyan University in Middletown\, Connecticut. It will be preceded by 3 days of virtual workshops\, March 9-11\, and will include a dedicated Organic Land Care workshop track. \nTickets include access to all virtual workshops\, the in-person conference on March 13 (including lunch)\, and exclusive access to all virtual workshop recordings for 3 months after the conference. Tickets are available now and in several formats: \n\n$70 – Accredited Organic Land Care Professionals\n$90 – General Admission\n$100 – Bronze Supporter Ticket (this ticket helps to defray the cost of lunch for scholarship attendees)\n$120 – Silver Supporter Ticket (this ticket helps cover the conference and lunch cost for scholarship attendees)\n$140 – Gold Supporter Ticket (this ticket fully funds an additional scholarship ticket for someone who would otherwise be unable to attend)\n\nWe’re deeply appreciative of those who are able to ‘pay it forward’ by choosing one of the Supporter tier tickets. By doing so\, we are able to make scholarship tickets available to those who might not otherwise be able to attend. \nPlease note: to access discounted AOLCP tickets\, you MUST login through our member portal. You may do so at the ticketing page by clicking on the “login” button in the upper right corner of that window.
