SUMMARY:Soil Health 3-Ways - July Session
DESCRIPTION:This 4-class course confers 4 CEUs for AOLCPs. \nUnder the tutelage of CT NOFA Soil Health Program Manager\, Monique Bosch\, Soil Health 3-Ways participants will attend three virtual classes (via Zoom) that cover the three main properties of soil – physical\, chemical\, and biological – in the lead-up to an in-person\, practical application class. This 4-class course is intended for both commercial farmers and home gardeners to help them work with nature to produce healthy plants and nutrient-dense food. \nA single registration for this event includes access to all four classes in the course (descriptions\, dates\, and times detailed below). Zoom links for the virtual classes will be provided after registration. Attendance is limited to 22 participants. \nClass Details\nPhysical Properties (virtual) – July 9th\, 6:00pm-7:30pm\nYou will learn to interpret what type of soil and conditions you are working with\, using simple tools and methods. We will explore management practices for best structure\, texture\, and tilth. Understanding the physical properties of soil will help with many aspects of soil health that are often ignored. Rather than relying just on a chemical soil test\, physical testing will give us a better understanding of the actual make-up of our soils. This class will give you the ability to use simple tools to perform physical tests on soil to determine compaction\, soil texture\, structure and permeability. \nChemical Properties (virtual) – July 16th\, 6:00pm-7:30pm\nWe will learn how to interpret a chemical soil test\, analyzing macro and micro-nutrients\, pH\, Cation Exchange Capacity and Organic Matter content\, and how these values affect our soil’s ability to grow healthy plants and nutritious food. Using regenerative farming methods\, we will address issues of nutrient deficiency\, chemical imbalance\, and excesses. \nBiological Properties (virtual) – July 23rd\, 6:00pm-7:30pm\nWe will study the ‘Soil Food Web\,’ learning about the living organisms in our soil\, from the visible to the microscopic. Using a microscope\, we will zoom in to study the microbial communities that live in our soils and compost. With an understanding of the complex trophic structure of life in our soils\, we can determine aggregate structure\, fungal/bacterial ratios\, as well as nutrient cycling\, all influenced by our soil management practices\, as well as the chemical and physical make-up of our soils. \nPractical Application (In-Person @ The Hickories Farm) – July 25th\, 1:00pm-4:00pm\nThe course will conclude with an in-person\, practical application meeting at The Hickories Farm in Ridgefield\, CT\, putting to use many of the skills and topics we have covered in the previous virtual sessions. We will perform physical testing of soil\, including methods that you can apply to your own land or garden. To help determine the life in soil\, we will have microscopes on-hand to study various soil/compost samples. Together\, we will explore how we can work with nature to create healthy\, living soil. \nCost\nThis course is free for all participants thanks to grant funding through the Transition to Organic Partnership Program. \nClick here to register for this course

SUMMARY:Landscape Practices\, Ethics\, and Expertise: Indigenous Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:This course confers 2.5 CEUs for AOLCPs. AOLCPs receive 10% off the cost of the course. The discount code is available in the AOLCP Portal. If you have problems accessing the portal\, please email us. \nPart 1 | Wetlands: Ecological & Cultural Values\nBonnie Thomas & Nancy Turner\, PhD \nIn Northwestern North America\, wetlands (bogs\, estuaries\, swamps\, ponds\, tidal marshes)\, have been fundamental habitats and biodiversity hotspots. For over 14\,000 years\, these special ecosystems have provided First Peoples of the region with important foods\, medicines\, and materials. Many of our wetlands today have deteriorated and are in serious need of restoration. We dedicate the talk to Bonnie’s late Mother\, Secwepemc knowledge keeper\, Dr. Mary Thomas\, who taught us about a key wetland in her territory: the Salmon River estuary. \nPart 2 | What is the Role and Responsibility of a Professional in Respecting Indigenous Rights?\nPeggy Smith\, PhD \nWe often think upholding Indigenous rights is the responsibility of governments\, but professionals who work in the field of lands and resources have the potential to either undermine or uphold Indigenous rights. Dr. Smith will discuss how Indigenous rights shape land management and development\, as well as the responsibilities of professionals to uphold those rights through training and practice. \nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:Practical Soil Assessments for Ecological Landscaping
DESCRIPTION:This event confers 3 CEUs for AOLCPs \nOrganic and ecological landscaping is more than purchasing amendments or avoiding herbicides—it begins with building healthy soil. If you (or your clients) are concerned about weed pressure\, erosion\, drought stress\, or long-term input costs\, strengthening soil function is one of the most effective solutions. In this workshop\, we’ll explore how soil health underpins successful landscapes\, whether you’re managing properties professionally or stewarding a home garden. Facilitators will introduce practical tools and strategies to help you assess soil conditions and make more informed\, site-specific decisions. \nDesigned to support professional skill development\, this session builds participants’ capacity to evaluate soil physical and biological conditions using hands-on\, field-based assessment methods. You’ll practice interpreting key indicators—such as compaction\, water infiltration\, aggregate stability\, and microbial activity—and learn how to translate those observations into ecological landscaping and land management practices that improve resilience\, plant performance\, and long-term site health. \nThroughout the afternoon\,  we will: \n\nLearn what to look for when making soil assessments\, including visual indicators of soil structure\, aggregation\, and surface conditions\nUse simple field-based tools to evaluate soil physical characteristics such as water infiltration\, aggregate stability (slake)\, and compaction (penetrometer\, and discuss how these factors influence root growth\, drainage\, and erosion risk\nUnderstand how site hydrology interacts with soil structure and management practices to affect water movement and plant performance\nExplore biological indicators of soil health using tools such as microbial biomass measurements (microBIOMETER) alongside visual examples of soil microbiology through microscopic video observations\nDiscover practical ways to integrate soil-centered\, ecological practices into landscaping and land care work\n\nLearn more.

It is unfolding daily in our yards\, parks\, and landscapes\, manifesting itself in storms of unprecedented intensity that alter forests overnight and diseases spreading rapidly through degraded habitats. Traditional landscape management methods—rigid\, manicured\, and heavily dependent on constant intervention—have proven insufficient to respond to the pace and scale of change. This symposium directly engages with these evolving conditions\, bringing together three distinct yet complementary perspectives rooted in ecological landscape design\, infectious disease ecology\, and arboretum management and horticulture. Each speaker brings practical wisdom and conceptual depth\, highlighting strategies to enhance resilience\, sustain biodiversity\, and creatively adapt to environmental uncertainty. \n\n\n\n\nAt the heart of this gathering is an exploration of critical intersections: between human intention and ecological spontaneity\, biodiversity and community health\, and catastrophic events and innovative recovery. Renowned landscape designer Larry Weaner will advocate for design approaches that embrace the inherent dynamism and unpredictability of natural systems\, showing how ecological principles can guide the creation of self-sustaining\, adaptive landscapes. Dr. James Shepherd of Yale will illuminate the often-overlooked relationship between biodiversity loss and human health\, explaining how restoring balanced ecosystems can reduce the spread of infectious diseases. Lastly\, Kathleen Salisbury’s experience managing the Ambler Arboretum after catastrophic storm damage provides a compelling case study in how horticultural expertise and creative leadership can transform ecological devastation into powerful educational opportunities and model landscape-restoration projects. Together\, these speakers challenge us to deepen our ecological literacy and cultivate practical\, adaptable responses to the environmental disruptions shaping our era. \n\n\n\n\nThis symposium is designed for attendees at all levels of experience and expertise\, from enthusiastic beginners to seasoned professionals. Throughout the day\, participants will have opportunities during breaks to connect with organizations actively shaping environmental awareness and action\, such as Dark Sky International New Jersey\, Jersey-Friendly Yards\, FoHVOS New Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team\, The Nature of Reading Bookshop\, and Garden State Gardens. These interactions will provide valuable resources\, deepen community ties\, and further enrich the day’s discussions. \nAOLCPs will earn 3 CEUs by attending this meeting. \nClick here to learn more and register to attend.

SUMMARY:Ecological Landscape Alliance 2025 Season's End Summit
DESCRIPTION:ELA’s 2025 Season’s End Summit fulfills CEU requirements for any attending AOLCPs. \nThis year’s summit will feature 4 great speakers on the theme of ‘Fire and Water’. When managed properly\, each has the potential to benefit landscapes and the environment. Dan Wilder will discuss fire on a New England Landscape\, Melissa Cullina will introduce a new book on wetland plant ID\, Trevor Smith will discuss the green roof project\, and Jay Archer will talk about stormwater management. \nRegistration Details: \n\nELA Member $ 129\nNon-Member $ 169\nELA Member Virtual Registration $74\nNon-Member Virtual Registration $89\n\nREGISTER HERE\nPresentations & Agenda (exact time TBD) \nCelebrating and Demystifying New England’s Aquatic Plants | Melissa Cullina\, Vice President of Plants and Science\, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens \nNew England’s freshwater aquatic plants are at once incredibly beautiful\, diverse\, fascinating\, and uniquely adapted to their watery environs. However\, with derogatory colloquial names like pondweeds\, duckweeds\, pickerelweeds\, and mermaid weeds\, their special niche ecological adaptations and features – not to mention the rarity and imperilment of numerous species – have been long underappreciated. A ground-breaking and accessible new field guide will introduce thousands of nature enthusiasts\, environmental advocates\, lake stewards\, and biologists to the importance\, ecological significance\, and specific diagnostic features of the hundreds of aquatic plants of New England’s lakes\, ponds\, rivers\, streams\, and estuaries. And – it will also share key diagnostic features of invasive plant species that threaten the integrity of our freshwater aquatic systems. Got paddles? A swimsuit? A passion for conservation? Then this field guide is for you! Join us on an incredible journey to observe\, appreciate\, evaluate\, steward\, conserve\, and yes – sometimes\, control — the underappreciated plants of New England’s aquatic ecosystems. \nGreen Roof Bus Shelter Initiative | Trevor Smith\, Design & Education Director\, ReEarth Studio at Social Impact Collective \nIn August 2024\, the City completed the installation of green roofs on thirty bus shelters along the 28 bus route. The largest installation of its kind in North America\, the addition of green roofs to bus shelters along busy and hot streets can help reduce extreme heat\, provide direct shade at bus shelters\, help reduce flooding from heavy rain\, and improve plant pollinator biodiversity. Trevor Smith will take you through the design process as well as the process of getting a project of this scope done. Learn how small\, simple steps can have a huge impact on our built environment and how this approach may be exactly what we need to begin to reverse the effects of climate change. \nInnovative Stormwater Solutions: Landscape Engineering Beyond Grading and Drainage | Jay Archer\, Landscape Ecologist; Landscape Designer; Founder of GJLD \nWhat is more precious than water? Conservation and water quality are one of the most critical environmental issues we face in landscape ecology. We will explore techniques and processes for managing water in the landscape environment. Focusing on residential watersheds\, we will consider innovative best management practices to optimize our use and treatment of water in our constructed landscapes. Taking a holistic view\, we will examine design\, construction\, and management practices ranging from physical engineering ( catch basins\, piping\, dry wells etc.) to soils\, topography\, and plant selection \nHistorical and Future Fire: Lessons Learned at Chapin Barrens | Dan Jaffe Wilder\, Director of Applied Ecology for the Norcorss Wildlife Foundation. \nHistorically\, fire has been an active driver of ecosystems on the eastern seaboard for thousands of years\, resulting in some of the region’s most unique natural communities and species. Roughly half of the region’s rare\, terrestrial species can be found in these fire-adapted communities. However\, landscape fires are significantly less common than they were 500 years ago. Modern wildfires are extinguished as quickly as possible or burn with such intensity that they are difficult to manage\, often leading to destruction. Join Dan Jaffe Wilder\, the Director of Applied Ecology at Norcross Wildlife Foundation\, for a discussion about fire ecology\, the history of fire in the region\, the effects of fire suppression\, and how to put fire back on the landscape in a safe and effective manner.

SUMMARY:Utilizing Natural Disturbances in the Establishment and Maintenance of Prairie Vegetation
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will explore how natural disturbances\, such as grazing and fire\, can be valuable tools in the establishment and maintenance of prairie ecosystems. We’ll delve into how grazing by herbivores influences plant diversity and structure\, while fire serves as a natural disturbance that promotes the dominance of grasses and prevents woody plant encroachment. By understanding these interconnected processes\, we can appreciate their role in shaping vibrant\, resilient prairies. The discussion will also touch on how these ecological forces contribute to soil health\, biodiversity\, and the overall sustainability of prairie landscapes. To conclude the program\, Larry Weaner will join Chad to discuss ways to overcome the practical difficulties of incorporating these strategies outside of agricultural or ecological restoration settings. These will  include the potential availability of new landscape services and equipment that can provide mechanized facsimiles of the processes described in the program. \nThis NDAL course is available to AOLCPs at a 10% discount and can be used toward this year’s CEU requirement. AOLCPs may email us for the discount code. \nClick here to register for the course and then click the “Have a coupon?” link (beneath the price total) to apply the discount code.\n\nChad Bitler is the Senior Director of Research and Agroecology at Greenacres Foundation\, a non-profit organization focusing on education and research in the areas of agriculture and conservation.  Chad leads the Greenacres Agroecology team with the intent to explore connections between agroecological practices and the outcomes on soil health\, food quality\, and the environment – which are all inextricably linked. The data collected from Greenacres’ research aims to inspire farmers\, ranchers\, and land managers to instill practices that produce nutritious food\, provide valuable ecosystem services\, and offer high-quality habitats for native species. Chad graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a B.S. in Biological Sciences and an M.S. in Nutritional Sciences.  He has collaborated on research with notable land-grant universities and organizations to help increase the collective knowledge surrounding agroecological practices.

SUMMARY:Indigenous Edible Landscape Design: Lessons from the Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:The notion that the Americas were “wilderness” prior to European arrival is false. The notion that Native Americans were sparsely populated and technologically stunted are also false. The Americas were inhabited for 25\,000+ years according to recent archaeological finds\, and within this time period humanity managed to transform vast regions into edible ecosystems that benefitted both humans and non-humans alike. Dr. Johnston’s extensive research in the area draws lessons from paleo-archaeological stories of abundant and sustainable bioregional food systems and applies them to contemporary landscape design\, with a focus on edibility ratings. How can we (and why should we) make our household\, municipality and community landscapes more edible\, moving away from the “ornamental” goals of Euro-centric landscape design? \nThis NDAL course is available to AOLCPs at a 10% discount and can be used toward this year’s CEU requirement. AOLCPs may email us for the discount code. \nClick here to register for the course and then click the “Have a coupon?” link (beneath the price total) to apply the discount code.\n\nLyla June Johnston is an Indigenous musician\, scholar\, and community organizer of Diné (Navajo)\, Tsétsêhéstâhese (Cheyenne) and European lineages. Her research focuses on the ways in which pre-colonial Indigenous Nations gardened large regions of Turtle Island (aka the Americas) to produce abundant food systems for humans and non-humans. Contrary to popular belief\, Indigenous Peoples leveraged immense influence on their surrounding lands\, fires\, and waters in ways that could heal our planet today. Her work translates this poorly understood history to the Western world and highlights the connection between Indigenous land ethics\, decolonial narratives\, carbon sequestration\, biodiversity augmentation\, anthropogenic habitat expansion\, and regional ecosystems connectivity. The success of the systems is believed to be due to their underlying value system of respect\, reverence\, responsibility and reciprocity.

Uncovering a Site’s True Potential (indoor lecture)\nSteve Conaway & Robert Graham\nIn this presentation Steve and Robert will discuss the essential work of site assessment in uncovering the plant community traits\, ecological processes\, and past human activities that inform New England’s widely varied landscapes. Through historic land use records\, observations on the ground\, and regional resources they will show how to effectively reveal the potential diversity and ecological character of a site. With insights from the past and analysis of the present\, designers can more successfully enhance botanical diversity while curating inspirational spaces that elicit a true “sense of place.” \nGuiding and Enhancing Vegetative Potential: Assessment into Design (indoor lecture)\nLarry Weaner\nHow does the deep site analysis described in the previous presentation translate into an ecological restoration\, a garden design\, or a blend of the two? How does spontaneous recruitment of wild plants and the self proliferation of planted ones fit into a designed planting plan? Through case studies of New England projects on a variety of scales\, Larry will illustrate how ecological characteristics and processes like disturbance\, competition\, conservatism\, plant colonization\, senescence\, and ecological succession can combine the existing vegetative inclinations of a site with the practical and artistic visions of the designer and client. \nForest Walk (outdoor walk)\nSteve Conaway and Mark Richardson\nWe will visit and compare two woodland habitats where we will discuss how their varied environmental conditions and disturbance histories have affected their current vegetative compositions. These will include an upland\, Oak-dominated forest where a host of native herbs dominate the understory\, with little to no invasive species presence; and an adjacent lowland forest where invasive species abound\, but with occasional novel species like rattlesnake plantain and large whorled pogonia. \nField Walk (outdoor walk)\nRobert Graham and Larry Weaner\nWe will visit multiple meadows with varying compositions and histories\, including a native meadow that was planted in 2021; an older meadow dominated by pasture grasses and many of the broadleaf forbes that commonly associate with them; and a wet meadow containing a large population of native forbs and shrubs\, managed by period mowing. Finally\, we’ll visit an invasive plant-dominated vernal pool and discuss aggressive vs. gradual approaches to a native plant transition. \n\nRegistration Information\nAOLCPs will receive a 10% discount on this course and it will count towards an AOLCP’s CEU requirement. SUMMARY:Propagating & Sowing New England Meadow Plants
DESCRIPTION:New England meadow plants include a wide array of genera and are wonderful succession plants for many landscapes—dry open fields or damp\, shady woodland clearings\, large garden borders or converted lawn spaces. In Partnership with CT NOFA\, this hands-on workshop welcomes all horticulture professionals\, whether nursery growers\, gardeners\, or landscape designers\, to come learn about the considerations and processes of propagating\, sowing\, and growing native herbaceous species. Instructors Leo Kenney from Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary and Emily Baisden from Wild Seed Project will discuss seed preservation\, methods for strong and timely germination\, and growing materials. Students will leave confident in the knowledge that they can incorporate these species into their businesses operations. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLeo Kenney is an ecologist and horticulturist currently based at Norcross Wildlife Foundation. There they work to enhance and supplement native plant communities and improve wildlife habitat using a wide array of applied ecology techniques\, including seed collection\, propagation from wild seed\, restoration planting\, and invasive species management. \nEmily Baisden works as the Seed Propagation Manager for Wild Seed Project. Prior to that\, Emily served as Entomologist and Educator at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. She has an extensive background in native horticulture and environmental education and focuses largely on using native plants to support food webs and biodiversity.
