SUMMARY:Fall 2022 Ornamental and Turf Short Course
DESCRIPTION:If you have not yet registered\, please do so by Sept. 30.  Please share this information with your networks!  Thank you very much.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFall 2022 Ornamental and Turf Short Course\n\nWednesdays 5:30 pm\, from October 5 – December 7\, 2022\n\nClick here to register today! \n \nRegistration will remain open until Friday\, September 30\n \nQuestions? Please contact Alyssa Siegel-Miles\, alyssa.siegel-miles@uconn.edu\n  \n\nOrnamental and Turf Online Short Course Description\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUConn Extension offers an online Ornamental & Turf Short Course in the fall and winter\, which helps students prepare for the pesticide applicator supervisory exam. \nThis Short Course is an in-depth review of the information necessary for studying and fulfilling the requirements of the Ornamental and Turf/Golf Course Superintendents State of Connecticut Supervisory Pesticide Applicator Certification exam. A student that completes all the modules\, works through the quizzes\, and studies the resource materials independently should be able to pass both the written and oral state exam successfully. \nThis short course consists of eight modules that the student can complete independently: Pesticide Laws and Regulations\, Pesticide Safety\, Botany\, Plant Pathology and Ornamental Plant Diseases\, Entomology and Insect Pests of Woody Ornamentals\, Area and Dosage Calculations\, Turf Management\, and Weed Management. Each module consists of learning objectives\, topic sections\, and slides with a recorded narrative\, and closes with a quiz on the material. The modules can be completed and revisited at any time while the student is enrolled in the course. \nAn instructor will meet virtually with the students weekly for 8 weeks on Wednesdays at 5:30 pm to review each module topic and answer questions. Each weekly class includes a basic overview of the subject and highlights specific pests\, their biology\, and control. \nExpect to spend study time reviewing each module topic outside of the review class. The more time you spend studying the module topics and reviewing each module’s post-quiz\, the more beneficial the course will be for preparing for the final short course exam and the state exam. \nRegister at UConn Extension Marketplace \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCOURSE MATERIALS:\nThe Pesticide Applicator Core Manual\, the required training manual for the course\, can be purchased from UConn Marketplace ($44\, including shipping)\, at: UConn Marketplace Core Manual (Click on the Department of Extension box and scroll down.) WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO OBTAIN AND READ THE “CORE MANUAL” BEFORE THE CLASS BEGINS. \n  \nThe Core Manual can also be downloaded for free from the “National Association of State Departments of Agriculture” at: https://www.nasda.org/foundation/pesticide-applicator-certification-and-training \n  \n“Turfgrass Nutrient and Integrated Pest Management Manual\,” edited by Tim Abbey\, is an additional valuable and highly recommended resource\, available for free at: http://cag.uconn.edu/documents/Turfgrass-IPM-manual-s.pdf.pdf \n  \nAn optional manual\, “Ornamental and Turf\, Category 3 Manual” ($43.00 plus shipping and handling)\, is also available from Cornell at: https://www.cornellstore.com/3.-Ornamental-And-Turf \n  \nCheck for used copies of these books with your colleagues or online. \n  \nInformation regarding testing and other information can be found on the CT DEEP website links: https://portal.ct.gov/DEEP/Pesticides/Pesticide-Management-Program\n\nInformation for Supervisory Certification is at: https://portal.ct.gov/DEEP/Pesticides/Supervisor-Certification/Certification-Process-and-Requirements-for-Supervisors\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlyssa Siegel-Miles \n  \nProgram Aide \nUConn Extension \nNew London County \n562 New London Turnpike \nNorwich\, CT 06360 \n(P) 860-887-1608 \n(F) 860-886-1164 \n  \nUConn Extension Ties Research to Real Life \n  \nThe University of Connecticut is an Equal Opportunity Employer and Program Provider.

SUMMARY:Meadows with Mike Nadeau
DESCRIPTION:Join wholistic land care expert Mike Nadeau\, as he teaches how to create an Organic Native Meadow. Mike will take us through the entire process\, including site analysis\, design\, seed selection\, site work\, monitoring and maintenance.  The zoom session will cover the theory behind the work\, with visuals on the process and what to expect. The following week we will join Mike in Norfolk CT\, in the meadow he created 4 years ago\, as he shows us successes\, lessons learned and the evolution from here.  On the same site we’ll tour a meadow in the process of being organically prepared for seeding. See what a well-prepared meadow site looks like just before seeding\, and an up-front look at the results. \nThis course takes place over two days: via Zoom on October 13\, 7:00pm-8:30pm\, and live in the field October 22\, 2:00pm-5:00pm. \n \nOct. 13TH – Zoom\, 7 – 8:30 pm\,  Oct. 22nd (Live) 2 – 5 pm
